About What A Blessing Ministries

The mission of What A Blessing Ministries Inc is to meet the spiritual and social needs of people living in Brunswick and surrounding counties. Our founder, Rev. Dr. Lenda B. Hankins, has earned a Masters Degree in Counseling, a Masters Degree in Administration and a Doctoral Degree in Bible Studies. She is an ordained minister, former school administrator and counselor and owner/director of a child placement agency. Dr. Hankins is also retired after 32 years with Duke Energy. She and her husband, Corbett, a financial advisor and co-founder of What A Blessing Ministries Inc, have served the community in many capacities for more than 35 years.

North Carolina has the 4th highest number and the 3rd highest rate of k-12 school suspensions in the United States. During 2013 – 2014, North Carolina K-12 public schools handed out 198,254 short-term suspensions, 1088 long-term suspensions and 17 expulsions. Students missed over 650,000 school days because of out-of-school suspension. Research shows that these students face an increased risk of academic, psychological and behavioral problems, and that suspension brings only negligible benefit to the classroom environment. WABM is a community partner that has identified the need for daily tutoring and academic monitoring for middle and high school students who have been served with short-term (up to 10 days) academic suspensions. The program designed to meet this need is called ON THE RIGHT TRACK. It is not unique as there are similar programs operating in a few counties across the state that continue to show success in their program objectives. Our objective is to get this program up and running successfully and then expand into other counties as the opportunity arises.
WABM will also provide financial assistance to those persons who express a need for help purchasing their medicine. Oftentimes, people may face a financial tsunami and have nowhere or no one to turn to for much needed medicine that could ease their pain and suffering. Prospective clients will be vetted to determine their eligibility for assistance. If selected for assistance and provided funds are available, the funds will be paid directly to the pharmacy where the prescription is filled, not to the requestor. This program is called LEND-A-HAN.
